Brisbane audiences will have the opportunity to hear Ukrainian violin Maestro Orest Smovzh, winner of the Tadeusz Wroński Violin Solo Competition, and participant in the Joseph Joachim and Carl Nielsen International Violin Competitions.

A regular figure on the international circuit, Orest has displayed his powerful musical abilities in concert halls throughout the USA, UK, Germany, Israel, Singapore and Japan. Throughout the course of his travels, he has performed on instruments made by Guarneri del Gesù and Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. Orest is currently completing a master’s degree with the illustrious violinist Midori Gotō in Los Angeles.

After a selection of chamber works involving Orest and some of the best of Brisbane’s emerging artists, the concert will conclude with Aaron Copland’s suite from Appalachian Spring, a piece so universally beloved that, in the composer’s own words, it has “taken on a life of its own”. Anyone unfamiliar with Appalachian Spring will almost certainly recognise the suite’s climax: the beautiful, stirring Shaker song, Simple Gifts (more familiar to Australian ears as the hymn Lord of the Dance).
