Exotic Tales

The BPO treks through exotic worlds in our end of year finale. We welcome the 2017 Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition winner, Oscar Wong, who will perform Saint-Saën's ‘Egyptian’ concerto –  a musical travelogue conjuring the sounds of a sea voyage, the chirping of frogs and crickets on the Nile and the exotic songs of the bazaar. Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia takes us on a caravan journey along the Silk Road and Rimsky-Korsakov's masterpiece Scheherezade closes the concert with its vivid and colourful depiction of the beautiful slave girl Scheherezade enthralling the cruel Sultan with tales of the Arabian Nights.
